Does CBD help relieve Arthritis?

What is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is a compound found in the cannabis plant, used medicinally for pain relief and the reduction of epileptic seizures. While cannabidiol is mildly psychoactive (mind-altering), its physiological effects are very different from those of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the constituent of cannabis that is responsible for the mood-altering effects associated with its use as a recreational drug.

CBD, unlike THC, does not give you a psychoactive effect “a high”.

CBD can be derived from both the Hemp & Marijuana plant, however is most often from the Hemp plant.

What is Arthritis?

The two most common forms of arthritis are Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where a person’s immune system attacks their joints, causing inflammation. It commonly affects the hands and feet leading to painful, swollen, and stiff joints.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that affects joint cartilage and bones, then causing pain and stiffness. This often affects the hip, knee, and thumb joints.

How can CBD help with Arthritis?

From animal studies it has shown that CBD has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, but these effects have not been validated in quality studies in humans. Anecdotally, some people with arthritis who have tried CBD, but not all, report noticeable pain relief, sleep improvement and/or anxiety reduction.

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, interact with receptors that influence pain and inflammation in the body. CBD may block certain receptors that allow for levels of an endocannabinoid called anandamide to increase in the body.

Are there side-effects to CBD?

Yes, like with anything there are some minor side-effects to CBD.

  • diarrhea
  • fatigue
  • changes in weight or appetite
  • Dry mouth

It is unknown if CBD causes any long-term side effects due to a lack of research. So far, experts haven’t identified any major long-term risks.

The World Health Organization declared CBD to be generally safe in 2017, however it could have adverse effects when used with other medications. Which is why you should always consult with your doctor before using CBD.

How do you take CBD?

CBD can be taken in many different forms: Orally, edibles, smoking, and topicals.

To take CBD orally would be through oil tinctures, sprays, and capsules. Edibles are ingestible food or drinks such as gummies or teas. Smokable CBD included hemp flower and vapes.

Is CBD Legal?

You must check with your state's current laws. CBD products that are  derived from hemp are no longer considered Schedule I drugs under the federal Controlled Substances Act, however there still remains a legal gray zone. CBD derived from the Hemp plant is federally legal but not legal in certain states. CBD derived from the Marijuana plant is federally illegal but legal in certain states. There are changes underway on federal and state levels that will ultimately clarify the laws and regulations related to CBD-based products and sales. Despite that, they’re widely available in nearly every state and online. People who want to use CBD should check their state laws.
